Malawi MOH is good at acquiring new up-to-date basic medical equipment either from donors or through normal Health Ministry Procurement. However, maintenance culture remains a challenge. For instance, from 2006 to 2009, the Physical Asset Management (PAM) Department had only two experienced senior technicians against all sophiscated and dynamic medical equipment in all public hospitals. Resultantly, many equipment could run without proper and timely servicing, ending up in frequent breakdowns! I hope the MOH in these two years, 2010 and 2011 has had done something progressive, otherwise such donations are subjected to inefficient utilization for optimum life-span of such medical equipment.
